One reason why we do not believe we ourselves are worthy, simply because we exist, is because of our certainty that it is not true of other people. We ask ourselves, how is it possible that people who have committed inhumane atrocities be worthy simply because they exist? They are, you are and so is everyone.Bukeka Blakemorehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16535715244613127903noreply@blogger.comBlogger20125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4944792580119139455.post-29337470487769789502016-10-22T08:17:00.002-07:002016-10-22T08:17:39.563-07:00It's been a long time since I've blogged about anything. But there have many changes in my life. I got married, became a grandmother, updated my music, and the most important thing FULLY STEPPED INTO MY WORTH. The Surrender Adventures, the break up, the dating website that I stayed on for 30days and found the man of my dreams, allowed myself to be vulnerable, took on a full-time position, and creating a new chapter in my life, it has all been no pun intended WORTH IT!

I love you. More to come. More often.

I WANTED TO SHARE A MOMENT OF WORTH. It's a comment I sent to CBS Sunday Morning Show. The segment is called "The Long and the Short of It". Here is the link to the video http://www.cbsnews.com/video/watch/?id=7397602n&tag=mncol;lst;2. I place this here in case you want to see it before you read my comment to the station.

Sometimes it just has to be said.

"Yesterday, I had my routine of watching CBS Sunday Morning. A story caught my attention about hair cuts because I have a new cut that is getting a lot of attention.

I waited for the segment to have some styles of black hair but there were none. The psychologist, historians, and stylists all focused on white/ European hair.

To make it even more interesting, the only black women you aired was a women who was receiving help from a not-for-profit "dress for success" program wearing her hair straight, as if to remind us that if you want to be successful your hair needs to look white.

The icing on the cake was the closing of the segment which asked what is the most popular hair and OF COURSE the answer was "long and blond".

REALLY?

I think you owe your watchers an apology. In addition, it's February (African American History. How did you miss all that?"

As Chaz and I drove through several cities, Dallas, Austin, Corpus Christie....and more, he used his process with me of allowing the Universe through me. For example, I randomly picked out one of the coaching cards he created that instructed me to look out my window and find something that feels good, then go feel it, love it, and be it. We were sitting in the car, and after I read it, I looked out the window to see the ocean. This video says it all.
For example, before I left I had a performance at the Blue Room in Kansas City. Greg Carroll CEO of the American Jazz Museum told be to get in touch with a contact he had at a company called "ESP AFRIKA". The contact was Rashid Lombard. I emailed this man before I left but had received no response back. When I asked Mzwai of Novalis if he knew him, Mzwai said "I went to school with Rashid". He set up a meeting with the company and I left my CD's for consideration to be a performer at the next Cape Town Jazz Festival March 30th 2012.

Another experience of synchronicity is a book I was given by my dear friend Amy Brown. The name of the book is called "The Presence Process" by author Michael Brown who is from, where else, South Africa. The book anchors itself on deep breathing and integrating (as way of healing) emotional pain. Jane and I had many moments of having to breath deeply as we witnessed the most incredible love and passion amid poverty that is still not even the worst on the continent. In fact immigrants from other parts of the African continent come to Cape Town to end up living in what we would consider deplorable conditions. Some how no matter what, when you look in the eyes of some of the people living in conditions of racism and poverty you could always find a light.

Riversonderend (RSE)
Two hours Northeast of Cape Town is a town with a population of 5,500 people called Riviersonderend or RSE for short. There is a literally a wall that divides the town's black and white residents. The wall is painted with social graffiti with words of inspiration, encouragement and a message to get tested for HIV/AIDS. In the town is a woman named Liti (Lee-dee). Her son John has created a foundation that serves the people of this part of town to support Youth development, Social Entrepreneurship and Environmental Sustainability. John lives in Cape Town, but when he comes into RSE, the youth he has worked with gather around Liti's home. He is a sign of hope.

In the black side of town many adults have been diagnosed with HIV/AIDS and there is a high degree of alcoholism. A significant number of children have developmental challenges due to mothers who drink while pregnant. The white side of town are comprised mainly of retired white South Africans. They own the businesses in the town and would like to find a way to "integrate" but they don't want to be exposed to the crime and illness that has become associated with the black or coloured South Africans. There is a distinction between being a Black or Coloured South African. You are coloured if you are not white, BUT you cannot be affiliated with a tribe.

There are some whites in the town that recognize that the illness and drugs in the black community is not a "black" thing. Part of the grant that enabled this trip through The Light Center, aided in endeavors to bridge the Black and White divide. Some of the Black grandmothers (aka "gogo's) in the town have begun sewing and knitting projects to sell. They are excellent quality. While we were there a White business woman in the town who is also master quilter agreed to teach the Gogo's how to quilt and will help them sell them in her shop.

My most memorable moment while hanging out in RSE,was when I was walking through the town, If you walk slowly it takes 25 minutes to get from one end of town to the other. I spoke aloud, "God I don't know what is mine to do here but I am willing to do your will. So I just began singing aloud walking down the street. I came across a young girl named Monique. She had me sing Spirit Is Alive over and over, each time we ran into a new group of children. I sang it 3 times on the street in the same manner as if I were on a stage. I also took the time to get to know their goals and dreams. One high school freshman told me he wanted to be a lawyer but his teacher told him that he was hopeless. I told him to tell his teacher that "Bukeka from America said that you are not hopeless and that you can be a lawyer".

On Friday the clinic dispenses free medication to AIDS patients and I sang I'll Light a Candle in Your Name to those waiting in lobby while several of them were brought to tears.

BREATHE....

Blikkiesdorp (pronounced Blick-ees-dorp)
Bernadette is a woman about 5 foot with the power and a voice for justice that equals that of Martin Luther King or Mahatma Gandhi. She is a force to be reckoned with. She is the voice of Blikkiesdorp a settlement that was created to take the homeless and squatters off the street prior to the 2010 World Cup Soccer Championship that was held in Cape Town. The people living in Blikkies were forcibly removed and given tin shacks to live in. Sound familiar (Aparthied-this time separation by class.) The Novalis Institute was asked by the Mayor of Cape town to help with this eye soar of Cape Town.

During our visit to Blikkies, there was talk of a possible outbreak of Meningitis. Bernadette uses her cell phone to negotiate with government officials to draw attention to this crisis. She shares with us that the nearby hospital wants nothing to do with people from Blikkies. She takes her daughter to the hospital frequently to help her with respiratory problems developed from the metal in which her house is made of. One day Bern (her nickname) stated that she sat in the emergency waiting room and 5 people died right in front of her.

The sentiment is that the government does little to help with sick and elderly in hopes that the now 21,000 residents of Blikkies will simply die off. Children play on swing sets with no swings that are built on top of a hard rock surfaced ground. Electricity runs through the units but there is no running water inside the "units". One outdoor toilette is made available for very 4 dwellings.

Blikkie means "tin". Bern and her husband Ashey were given a computer and uses social media to bring light to the blight is Blikkiesdorp and uses that media as a weapon pointed at the government to shame them into creating change. On some levels that seems to be working. She will stress over and over that they are not interested in relying on the government, but the government should be aware that they are not willing to be put away and left to die.

BREATHE....

On the very day I left Cape Town, I spent a short time working with Robin Goff and care givers of individuals working with orphan children. During my portion of the presentation I introduced the group to EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) or tapping, which flowed well from Robin's work of healing touch. They tapped to my song "I Am Worthy of Love".

They affirmed "I love myself unconditionally" and "It's OK for me to receive." Bea Juris who works at Novalis and overseas programs for OVC (Orphans and Vulnerable Children) closed the day by reminding them that they are worthy and presented many of the workers with certificates of appreciation for the incredible work they do with children and youth.

In Closing....

My trip to South was the most amazing experience of my life. I have been noticeably transformed at depth. As I continued to practice being in the present moment and deep breathing through it all it aided me in dealing with the dichotomy of circumstances that make up South Africa. With all their challenges South Africa leads the world in environmental sustainability efforts.

I returned on Thanksgiving day. When I turned on the television Friday morning it was Black Friday and the news depicted shoppers rushing into Target and talk of "pepper spray". Immediately I shut the television off trying not to go into a place a judgement, which was not difficult to do.

Part of my shift in perception is that there are many many worldviews from where ever we happen to be on the planet. Somewhere in between insane greed and abject poverty lies a sea of humanity willing to give, produce, work, and celebrate the gift of being alive on a planet that is rich in substance, beauty and wonder.

With that, happy holidays, take NOTHING for granted and spend more time just being. Take time to practice deep breathing and simply take time to simply BE.

Love and Laughter
Before leaving for South Africa I was told that the Fezeka High School Choir wanted to learn the song that Rick Bacus and I wrote called "I'll Light a Candle in Your Name". When I played a YouTube link of them singing, I was amazed by their talent and their story.

Fezeka is located in a township of Cape Town called "Guguletu". When you think of the word "township", we're not talking country club. In South Africa a township refers to underdeveloped urban areas that were created during Apartheid in which blacks and non-whites were forcibly evicted from their homes to live in shelters often made out of metal. Guguletu is one of those townships.

In the YouTube link, I noticed that the school looked more like a prison than a school. The director of the choir mentioned in the video that arts and natural sciences was not part of the standard school curriculum. I was told that this is still the case in 2011 as these subjects are not directly related to what a person needs in order to have a regular job.

Mzandile (Mzawi for short) from Novalis was our escort to the high school and explained to us that the children were taking their year-end school exams (our winter is their summer). When we pulled up to the school it was just as I remembered from the video, an open yard surrounded by 3 brick buildings lined with classrooms. Some broken glass and a few kids kicking ball before the next class started. Everyone had on uniforms just as they did in the video.

Commonly before sharing our names we were introduced as "our guest from America". Robin Jane and I were escorted around to different classrooms and introduced to students. Finally we made it to the classroom where we would meet the choir. There we met a few students that work with Mzawi in youth theatrical programs, Aht, Mbuhti and Nomkhita. Then slowly but surely the choir members began to walk in. It appeared the director had been spending some time rounding them up (end of the school year...you can imagine). Soon everyone was present and the Mr. Tsewu gave a few words of introduction and then we began working on the song.

These kids learned so quickly. I would show them one time and they would have it down. I assigned a solo part to a young lady named Nolufefe. She was very shy but very confident as well. There was one note she was unsure of and another member of the choir offered to sing it with her. It was easy to tell that she was slightly disheartened.

It was Wednesday (Day 2) and many times Mr. Tsewu and Mzwai would discuss things in Xhosa with a mixture of English. We (the Americans) were lost. What was being discussed is the fact that we would be performing at Fezeka School's end of the year school party, which was on Friday. Thank God for fast learners. The rehearsal went so well, they wanted to learn another song so I taught them the title track to my current CD "Spirit is Alive". All I had to say to them was "do a three part harmony on the chorus" and they had it down easily. It was incredible.

After the rehearsal Mzwai gave us a tour of the Guguletu township. One of the sites is a monument dedicated to a group of seven young men that were murdered on March 3rd 1986 by apartheid security forces. They were each shot in the head along with multiple gunshot wounds. Another monument is for a girl named Amy Biehl. She was a student who had a huge heart for women in South Africa. On a Fulbright Fellowship she left for South Africa to attend University of Western Cape. She worked with leaders in organizations such as the African National Congress and other groups wanting a democratic and free South Africa.

So passionate about her work she didn't concern herself much with the color of her skin. One night she was murdered during a political mob rally by four men who were later convicted of the crime. A memorial in her honor stands in the Guguletu township where the killing took place and a foundation was established in her name. Surrounding these monuments were homes that in many cases were smaller than my modest living room and kitchen. I have several friends whose living rooms would equal 3 houses in Guguletu.

During rehearsal Robin Goff pointed out the lyric "I'll say a prayer that you are blessed beyond appearances" emphasizing the point that no matter what the outer conditions appear to be that a prayer would be made focusing the blessing. As we continued to ride through the township I looked at the housing conditions. These are the homes of the very talented students that I would be singing with. They truly are a blessing despite the conditions they live in which we see as impoverished or even hopeless.

The day of the performance arrived. Outside the community center was a dance and drumming group called Marimba who would later perform for the school party. I was interviewed by a local newspaper, the students gave a preview of their work to parents in an exhibit hall and then the concert and performing artists section was up. Spirit is Alive was the opening number and I'll Light a Candle in Your Name would be the finale'. Nolufefe came up to me and said "Bukeka I want to sing it by myself, but please don't tell my teacher". I told her I would tell him, but she begged be not to.

On Spirit Is Alive, the crowd went nuts. I was feeling like I had serious rock star status in front of a crowd of about 200 people. The other acts were comprised of students from Fezeka and they were so talented. There was modern dance, a short play about a family from Zimbabwe moving to Cape Town "where there are jobs man", and an African dance and drumming troop.

When we came to the finale' I asked "Fefe" if she was ready and she said "READY". We performed the song and got a standing ovation. We were only on Day 4 of our trip and we (the Americans) ended it by saying "this was an amazing day".
Now that I could inhale the air without a challenge, the flowers, the trees, and the occasional rain seemed even more beautiful than the day before.

The Novalis Center was expecting us for a morning meeting with a minister who was interested in meeting us and learning more about the center itself. Bishop Themba KaZulu was there with his deacons ready with questions and comments about his vision. It didn't take long to tell that this man was very direct, very clear, and expected for the rest of us to reflect that back to him. When someone in the meeting would use a particular word, he could very well want clarification as to what that word meant to person using it. It was a demonstration of seeking clarity that I truly appreciated.

As we sat around the table each person introduced themselves. When it became my turn I stated my name explaining that was I still learning how to pronounce it. The Bishop interupted my explaination of my presence there with the question "Excuse me, but how did you get that name?" I told him about my parents being involved in the civil rights movement and that many African Americans in the 60's were changing their names from what they called "slave" names to African names. I told him and his party that I had also met several people from Africa and that at 6 I wanted an African name and I chose Bukeka.

He along with his deacons were smiling and stunned as well. This was a pivital moment for me because I had come to expect that type of response from people here at home and I wondered what would be the response here. The Bishop asked me if I knew the meaning of my name and I told him what I understood; that it meant beautiful and was connected with being a princess.

He said to me that I did not know the true meaning of my name but by the time I left South Africa I would. He went on to say that this name is very special and in my innocense to have chosen such a name at such a young age it could have only been an annointing from God. The deacons continued to smile and one shared how he thought this was amazing and incredible and now my life had come full circle. That's when the first streams of tears began to flow.

I tend to pronounce my name with a long A sound in the middle (Bu-Kay-Kah). It's really a short A that is rather enlongated when spoken (Bu-Keh...Kah). It means "indescribable beauty, adorned, so beautiful its hard to take your eyes away"

From that point he began to tell us what additions we would be making to our current agenda. He said to me "You will sing at my church on Sunday". He then told Rev. Jane Simmons, that she would speak. That is the moment when Jane was stunned, and we all had a laugh of support for her. She said she would do 15 minutes and then the Bishop told Robin Goff she would speak for the other 15 minutes. We were all very happy to be part of his vision.

The Bishop said that his service begins right at 10am and last for exactly 2 hours letting out by noon. Now if you've ever been to a traditional Black Christian church you're saying to yourself "yeah right". This is a Black Penecostal type church service (in AFRICA). As expected we were out by 1pm and the time flew by as the minister preached, and the choir sang many, many times over again. It was wonderful.

During the service the minister was laying hands on people. It was not like laying on of hands to heal an affliction but more of an annointing. I heard a voice in my head that said "go". So I went and stood there with several others waiting their turn. Sometimes he placed his hands on their forehead, or the back of their head. When he came to me after putting oil in his hands he grabbabed my hands and held them tightly as he preached his words. When I returned to my seat I knew on some level I understood every word he was saying.

After church we went to the ministers house and had dinner. When I was a child my mother loved to play a song by South African artist Miriam Makeba called Pata Pata which I loved. I wanted to sing this song, but I was nervous about saying the words correctly so I asked for help. The dinner turned into a party.

When we retured to our rooms for a nap, I held my hands together and fell asleep them claps together. I felt so at peace with my life and everything in it. I wondered why he grabbed my hands. It is only now in this moment that I asked myself what do I do with my hands that are so important. The answer is "I write". I write to tell this story that feels as if it is a bridge of some sort that fosters an understandng between and among cultures and beliefs.

The other thing I do with my hands is receive. I receive the love and abundance in all the ways the Universe has to offer. On the final day of my trip which I will give more detail on later, Robin and I worked with caregivers at Novalis. I had them open their arms and say "it's ok for me to receive". Which has also been a good lesson for me and a tough message to hear for ourselves as we saw so many with appears to be so little.

Jane and I left for our trip to South Africa prepared to give as much as we could as well as knowing we woud recieve so much more. But I don't think either one of us were prepared for the unconditional outpouring of love and appreciation that we received from everyone we came in contact with.

Here are clips one of Miriam Makeba singing the Pata Pata song and other clips of Bishop Thema KaZulu.

MIRIAM MAKEBA 3/4/1932 to 11/8/2008. In the 1960s she was the first artist from Africa to popularize African music in the U.S. and around the world. People called here "Mama Africa" and she was best known for the song "Pata Pata", first recorded in 1957 and released in the U.S. in 1967. On November 9th 2008, she became ill while taking part in a concert. The concert was being held near Italy. Makeba suffered a heart attack after singing her hit song "Pata Pata"and was pronounced dead at the hospital. She was a singer and human rights activist until her death.
It's the same as "Fiesta time", "Island Time". "No worries man" time. But no matter the time, Jane Simmons of Unity Worldwide Headquarters in Lee's Summit, MO, Maura Fallon of Unity of the Hills in Austin, Texas, Executive Director of the Light Center in Baldwin, Kansas Robin Goff and I (let's just say "World Traveler) had the most amazing time together just being a presence of light during our trip to Cape Town, South Africa.

Time was an element that became an ongoing topic. As our schedule was being created on the fly which danced around planned events that had a scheduled start and ending time, it was humorous to see ourselves try to navigate or organize ANYTHING.

Race and color is an issue here in similar and yet non-similar ways as you find in the United States. In fact my first 24 hours the issue of race and culture was almost a throw back in time.

On the plane ride from London to Cape Town, I watched the movie "The Help". Now as I share this part of the story I trust my "white" friends will understand I only speak in these terms from a cultural understanding perspective.

In any case, my friends who happen to be white that saw the movie "The Help" were very excited to share with me their experience seeing it. When I would tell them I had not seen it many had the response "OMG you must see this movie". Many wanted me to see the movie and tell them what I thought. With a few of them I shared that the information depicted in the movie about segregation in the south (in reality the conditions of "The Help" were also in states far north of the Mason/Dixon line) were not new to me AND I would likely see it at some point.

Both my grandmothers were "The Help" in Wichita and Atchison, Kansas. I grew up hearing the stories they had of working for "whites". My mother has absolutely no desire to see the movie it all. But, I did watch the in flight movie and it was indeed very good, very real, and told the story with a sense of humor. One of the things depicted were the buses that dropped the black maids off in the white neighborhoods to go to work.

Jane and I stayed at a Bed and Breakfast in a predominately white suburb called Constantia. Martene, the first person we met (she picked us up from the airport in her "backie" or pick up truck) is the owner of the B&B. She moved to South Africa from France 25 years ago and for obvious reasons (the land, its beauty, its peacefulness) just decided to stay and has had no desire to return to her native country.

The next person we met was founder of the Novalis Ubuntu Institute Ralph Shepard. A lovely man who I adore. His passion for social and cultural activism in healing the divide between black and white through spiritual enlightenment is a model for the world. We also met his wife Anna Lisa who (I believe) was born in South Africa making her what is called (again I believe) Afrikans (as opposed to African). She is delightful and passionate in the same regard as her husband. (CLIP)

Ralph and AnnaLisa are also members of a worldwide spiritual organization called Emissaries of Divine Light that focuses on spiritual awakening, transformation, and leadership. They live in an area of Constantia where many Emissaries of Divine Light live. The houses are nestled inside a botanical garden. Every Tuesday the members get together to sing. Not to practice for some upcoming event or to practice at all-they simply spend this time in communion with one another through the spiritual practice of singing. AMAZING.

Since we arrived on Tuesday Robin, Jane and I participated in the sing-a-long. We all shared songs we'd like to sing and because I was the resident "professional" they definitely were looking forward to what I would add. We did my song The Universe is Calling and Send My Love (by Karen Drucker). It felt like I had gone back in time like an English colonial period. The experience of gathering around the piano to sing was like a Charles Dickens novel.. We were indeed "jolly" and I felt warmly welcomed and appreciated. At that moment it was evident (in terms of race), we had clearly moved forward in time.

The next day my first order of business was to get an asthma inhaler. Little did I realize (until the pharmacist informed me) that Cape Town has the largest number of botanical gardens in the world (thus my asthmatic episode which I have not had for almost 10 years). After inhaling the over the counter (only given by prescription in the US and cost about $18) Albuterol that cost me $4 US, I felt much better.

As I walked out of the mall I saw a bus full of black women getting off a bus, purse in tow, flat shows, walking slowly to the houses of where they would be the maids in the homes of a predominately white neighborhood. Walking back to Martene's I looked no different than these women. I could have easily been considered by people driving by as "The Help".

I have no reason to believe that the maids going to work in Constantia, experience the same racist views of many of the white women depicted in the movie. The racial make up of Black and White is the exact opposite as the United States. Whites in South Africa make up 12% of the countries population and Blacks make up 12% of US population. There are also several racial distinctions that you don't see in the US. There are Whites, Blacks and Coloureds. Coloureds are people of color that cannot be directly connected with a "tribe" such as Zulu or Xhosa (pronounced Ko-sa).

I'm thankful that I hold the belief that there is no "time" and that as I become more spiritually aware, transform, and practice a sense of "self-leadership and governance" that I am responsible for my perceptions and how I see the world. This trip to South Africa and particularly within the first 24 hours of my stay I could see the importance of having an expanded view of the world, appreciating its transformations, honoring "what is" and at the same time recognizing the up most importance of acceptance, non-judgment, and most importantly unconditional love for self and others.Bukeka Blakemorehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16535715244613127903noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4944792580119139455.post-77370437648898308652011-09-26T06:22:00.000-07:002011-10-02T18:22:51.088-07:00The Power of ApprecationOn October 9th Chaz Wesley and I will be doing a dual speaker/musical guests role at Unity of Peace in St. Louis, Missouri. When we thought about a title for the talk, appreciation was the first to come to mind. I have been in a real place of appreciation.

Many of my "The Bukeka Show" watchers know I'll be traveling to South Africa this fall. I am more than appreciative and in awe of how it all manifested. Right now I am eager and yet I am also dropping back a bit because, all along the way to this junction of my journey, I have been surrendering big chunks of stuff for the past year.

As you know I took a surrender adventure with my friend Chaz last year. Where every two hours we lit a candle, surrendered "to and unto the universe", an ultimately drove through 7 states, and I came back changed at the core level. Recently I shared the adventure in a workshop at Unity of Oklahoma City. The first thing people agreed upon is they needed "a Chaz". (He's at www.chazwesley.com). Call him I'm sure he'd listen.

The more I appreciate the experience of surrender, the better my life experience is. Each time I recognize what can be surrendered from my thought, I grow exponentially. I become keenly aware of what I am doing, feeling, and how I am behaving. I place no judgment on any of it and I allow myself to be present to whatever is there.

The more I surrender, the more appreciative I am of my life experience. Right now, I am experiencing a sence of GREAT change in my life. I feel it stretching me from all angles. To see it from the self-observer is facinating. As I let go, release, forgive, trust, and surrender I am in love with what I see changing but more importantly I am feeling freer and freer from boundaries and seeming limitations.

Some would call it simply maturity and that would be true too, and I appreciate maturity. I appreciate having a greater understanding for as much as I can understand anything at all.

Come see us in St. Louis if you're in the area.

Love and Blessings
Some people I know, are inspired because they know exactly what that looks like in their mind and are waiting to experience it. Some have dreams so big, it's hard for them to fathom doing anything else and are doing all they can to make their dreams come true. But as soon as any of this feels like pushing or fighting up against something, the inspiration turns into frustration.

The orthodox way of dealing with frustration is to DO, ACT, PUSH, RUN. Do anything but be still in the moment. But I would suggest to do just that. Allow the mind to quiet, and come from a place of peace. You may wonder, will you receive an answer, is this your"lot?" This is when it is time to abide in the stillness, be at peace with the silence. However you are to proceed, may come in such a slight whisper that it surfaces at the most unexpected moment in your conscious thought.

Since this life is not a test (to my knowledge) instead of living a movie where this one thing still exist in your life. Be Still. Instead to spending more energy pushing against it, be still. Allow the stillness to be as still as the coldest of nights. Abide in that stillness and in that peace for a while. And rewrite the script on a blank screen having left all the remnants behind of the old movie reel.

The survival of a race, an economic way of life, or position of power can compel us to kill, demonize, and victimize others to keep what we believe we are entitled to control. Our need to fight arises from the perception that resources are limited, and a core belief that if one person is worthy of those resources, then another is not.

Who would you place on your list of history’s “worst people”? For many Americans living today, Adolf Hitler or Osama Bin Laden may come to mind. Native Americans might recall people who took their land by force and placed them on reservations. For some retirees, or people who will never be able to retire, the worst people are corporate executives who embezzled billions of dollars, dissolving employee pensions and retirement savings.

It could be a rapist, a murderer, an abuser, or a traitor. How could any of these people be considered worthy of anything except the punishment of their crime? Based on destructive behaviors and actions, it may be hard to resolve that, no matter what, everyone, without exception, has value and worth.

But if we believe our worth is intrinsic, simply because we exist, then worth must be granted to everyone, regardless of behavior or flaws. Our existence-- not our actions--dictates our worth.

When we lack a sense of self-worth, we are unable to see it in others. Therefore, our behaviors and actions can become destructive. Something or someone without worth or value becomes disposable. If we all had self-worth and valued the worth of others, we wouldn’t engage in war and genocide.
Bukeka Blakemorehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16535715244613127903noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4944792580119139455.post-80668229828666160042011-04-18T10:00:00.000-07:002011-04-18T10:00:07.381-07:00Bathed In Surrender
After Chaz Wesley and I returned from the Surrender Adventure last year, I noticed the incredible open space that had become my life. It was new and unfamiliar. I looked around at my home, my furniture, my clothes and it was as though I had walked into a world that was mine but I had never been there.

Each chair I sat down in was for the first time. And when I sat in significant places I had to rearrange my body to a more comfortable position. It was not the same person sitting in the chair. The first correspondence I had with my significant other, I waited quietly to hear how his voice would sound. I wondered what he would say and never thought about how I would reply. Then he said the things he's said before, but this time it sounded like all the things you'd ever want your lover to say to you..."I support you 110%." "It' your time." on and on it went, and I fell in love all over again.

When Chaz talks about being in your business and getting back to your business, in this stage of noticing your thoughts as CEO of your business you get to choose what thoughts get fired. Clearing space, gaining clarity, opening the mind. Good CEO's will notice first and act later. This is when the real noticing begins.

I noticed my speech and demeanor were more assured. Rev. Chris Michaels of CSLKC said he noticed that my walk had changed and Rev. Jarie said she noticed a new swagger in my step. My voice got incredibly stronger and I started singing in ways I had not tried before. Bending more notes finding new ways to sing phrases of the songs I've written and performed.

In the song I wrote called Everyday there is a line that says, "I've been seeking the peace that washes over me, takes me completely." This is the feeling I have, bathed in peace and bathed in surrender.

We came home from the adventure July 21st 2010. I visited Chaz the next month in Tulsa. Sitting on my spot of the couch (Yes like the guy in Big Bang), I shared with him the new visions I was having. He reminded me that my job is very simple. My job, my business is to be worthy. I simply hold it out and let the passion the, juiciness and vibrant nature of my being pour out. He also reminded me that I am not alone and that others stand behind and with me to love and support me in doing a very simple job.

In that moment, I actually felt files of thoughts deleting from my consciousness and tears of that peace began to flow.

You may be preparing for or possibly bracing yourself for the experience of remembering the life of your mother. Last week, I sang for a memorial service for a mother of three and Grandmother of one. Her daughter is a very bright and progressive woman who I have had the privilege of connecting with named Jenny.

I am very happy that I can still have lunch or dinner with my mother. Many of us call my mother "Just Joan" or "OhtheJoan" fondly after my web person "Ohthebill" Rosen. My mother is clearly worthy of the titles as well as the audaciousness that comes along with them. I say this in the most complimentary way.

My mother Joan, is sweet, funny, tremendously caring and my possible ticket to having the next best reality TV show. During my surrender adventure with my cohort Chaz Wesley, I did release work around my mother and the feelings one has when loving someone who does have an opinion and will share it with you most of the time. .

What I came to realize is that whatever story my mother chooses to have or whatever memory she chooses to never let go of, she too is worthy of having it, if that's what she wants. In my childhood I wrote poems and stories about my wonderful mother. As an adult I found myself in a place of judgment about what she should be feeling or not, and asking myself "why is she making me feel this way?"

As much as I had come to understand about thoughts feelings, emotions and beliefs, I had a "mom-block". It's called "If it's not one thing it's your mother." But then it all came down to worthiness. Her worthiness, my worthiness, we all matter and have value regardless of how we display ourselves.

So if you are experiencing anything around the concepts of self-worth and mothers, take this moment to breath, allow, love yourself and know your worth.

But they are not the same. The Webster’s dictionary defines self-esteem as a feeling of pride in oneself. Self-worth is defined as the quality of being worthy of esteem or respect.

Self-esteem is externally driven, often reinforced by social and cultural values of behavior, knowledge, appearance and material wealth. Self-worth is internal, inherently bestowed upon every living being, unrelated to life conditions. It’s the foundation of self-respect and esteem. A person may have high self-esteem based on what they know, possess or how they look, but struggle endlessly to live up to their perceived potential. These individuals lack the self-worth that allows them to love themselves unconditionally. A dear friend years ago taught me a mantra that resonates with me to this day: I am worthy, simply because I am, Iam.

We often see ourselves and others as being worthy based on the balance in our bank accounts or accumulation of material possessions. We judge others’ worth based on the degree of their life achievement and how much more they’ve accomplished compared to someone else. None of this has anything to do with self-worth. We are worthy simply because we exist.

When you acknowledge your self-worth, you know you are sufficient – you are okay as you are, even during times when you feel low and discouraged. And conversely, when you have the world by the tail, and everything you touch turns to gold, you remember you are ultimately the same as everyone else. You avoid developing an oversized ego, and maintain a sense of gratitude, never taking what you have for granted.

Throughout the span of humanity there are ongoing episodes of people believing their worth is being threatened. At that point they immediately move into a mode of survival; fight or flight. To counter the impending threat a common tactic is to devalue or attempt to diminish the worth of others as a means to maintain their own.

The survival of a race, an economic way of life, or position of power, can spur humans (and it has been proven time and again) to literally, kill, demonize, and victimize others to keep what they believe they have the right to have and maintain for fear of losing it. It is a fear stemming from limited thinking of resources and a core belief that if one person is worthy then another cannot be.

But if we are to believe that our own worth is intrinsic simply because of our mere existence then it must be true for everyone else, despite the behavior or actions exhibited.

<![endif]-->
It is no secret that businesses can and do take out life insurance policies on individuals working for their company. It is a common practice to insure the lives of key personnel including executives, partners, and people deemed “essential”, so in the event of their death, the company will have income enough to keep the company afloat or to hire someone with equal knowledge and value. This type of policy is called corporate-owned life insurance or COLI. The value of the policy is generally based on the compensation or expertise of the deceased. It is not meant to add to a company’s profit or bottom line.

In April 2002 the Wall Street Journal ran an article written by staff reporters Ellen E. Schultz and Theo Francis entitled “Companies Profit on Workers' Deaths Through 'Dead Peasants' Insurance”, something at the time was deemed “as widespread as it is little-known”. The article cited the case of Felipe Tillman of Tulsa, Oklahoma who at 29 years old, died of complications from AIDS. Felipe had not purchased life insurance but the company he worked for CM Holdings Inc did. The company received a death benefit of $339,302 in Felipe’s name even though his employment ended before his death.

Here is what is known about Dead Peasant Insurance:

It provides a tax break to companies that purchase the policies.

Companies may take out loans using the cash value of the life insurance policy as collateral.

Companies have used death benefits to make good on executive bonuses.

Policies are now written on lower level or “rank and file” employees at amounts that far out way their salary or seniority.

A death benefit can be paid to the company even when the employee no longer works there.

Younger employees who die offer larger payouts than older workers due to actuarial computations that figure they are less likely to die young therefore “the same premium amount buys more coverage for them.”

Though this practice began to boom in the 1980’s, employers were not required to tell employees until 2006. Even still these policies are often done without the employee’s knowledge.

Some people find this practice acceptable and perfectly within the right of employers. They argue if the company pays the premium then the company should get the benefit. Others would say that their primary objection is the fact that companies have deducted the interest expense for loans from COLI policies from their taxes. However Congress has stepped up on restricting these instances where the interest is allowed to be tax deductible. Then there are those who find the practice appalling and several families have been successful in suing companies for taking out policies on employees without their knowing.

For those that are appalled, you may decide to take a stand and boycott the list of companies that maintain such a practice. If so, be prepared because you will likely not be able to cool or heat your home, use your credit card, talk on the phone, or clean your home, and if you like your whites whiter than white then “forgetaboutit”.

Many companies track the employees who have left their employment, but anticipate receiving a death benefit by checking the Social Security Administration's database of deaths. So, if you are unsure whether or not you have value and worth – simply because you exist, all you have to do is ask your current or previous employer to find out if you are lucky enough to be on their list.
Bukeka Blakemorehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16535715244613127903noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4944792580119139455.post-42912540331638920442010-09-14T18:35:00.000-07:002010-09-14T18:35:16.386-07:00An Evening with Michael Bernard Beckwith and Robert Thurman<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">On the night of this event, 400 or more people were in the audience and my view was obscured, so I took notes.
